Fold equity is the value you gain when opponents fold to your bet. It's the portion of the pot you "win" by making them give up.
Fold Equity = Opponent's Fold % × Current Pot
Why Fold Equity Matters
Without fold equity, you can only win at showdown. With it, you have two ways to win:
- ✅ Opponent folds → You win immediately
- ✅ Opponent calls → You might still win at showdown

Fold Equity = P(fold) × Pot
Example
Pot: $100 Opponent folds: 40% of the time
Fold Equity = 40% × $100 = $40
Your bet "wins" $40 on average just from folds.

Total EV = Fold Equity + (Call % × Equity × Pot) - (Call % × (1-Equity) × Bet)
