Definition
A delayed c-bet is when the preflop aggressor checks the flop, then bets the turn. You're "delaying" your continuation bet to a later street.
Delayed C-Bet = Check flop → Bet turn
Why Delay Your C-Bet?
| Reason | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Bad flop texture | Board hits villain's range |
| Pot control | Don't want to inflate pot yet |
| Deception | Appear weak, then attack |
| Turn improves range | Waiting for better cards |
| Induce bluffs | Let villain hang themselves |
When to Delay
1. Board Hits Villain's Range
| Board | Why Delay |
|---|---|
| 7♥ 6♥ 5♣ | Connected, low—BB range loves this |
| 8♦ 7♦ 4♣ | Too many draws |
| J♥ T♥ 9♣ | Extremely coordinated |
2. You Have Showdown Value
| Hand | Board | Why Delay |
|---|---|---|
| A♥ Q♦ | K♣ 8♦ 3♠ | Ace-high has showdown value |
| 8♠ 8♥ | A♦ 7♣ 2♠ | Small pair, pot control |
3. You'll Bet Better Turns
Some turns are great for your range:
| Turn Cards | Why Good |
|---|---|
| Overcards | Complete your broadways |
| Flush completers | You can rep the flush |
| Paint cards | More your range than theirs |
Delayed C-Bet Execution
Step 1: Check Flop
Check with:
- Hands with showdown value
- Some draws (deception)
- Air that will give up
Step 2: Evaluate Turn
If villain checks back:
- They likely have marginal hands
- Delayed c-bet gets folds
Step 3: Bet Turn
Size appropriately:
| Sizing | Purpose |
|---|---|
| 50-66% pot | Standard delayed c-bet |
| Larger | Protection or value |
Example
Preflop: You open BTN with Q♠ J♥, BB calls. Flop: 8♥ 7♥ 4♣
Analysis: Bad board for c-betting. BB has many 8x, 7x, draws.
Action: Check
Turn: K♦ (brick, good for your range)
Villain checks.
Action: Bet 50% pot—delayed c-bet.
Delayed C-Bet vs Giving Up
| Delayed C-Bet | Give Up |
|---|---|
| You have outs or blockers | Pure air, no equity |
| Turn is good for your range | Turn is bad |
| Villain likely weak | Villain showed strength |
Key Takeaway
Delayed c-bets allow you to avoid tough flop spots and attack when the turn improves your position. Check bad flops, then bet turns that favor your range or when villain shows weakness.
