Definition
Range vs range equity is the average equity your range has against your opponent's range. Instead of one hand vs one hand, it's all your possible hands vs all their possible hands.
Range Equity = Weighted average of all hand matchups
Hand vs Hand vs Range vs Range
| Comparison | Example | Equity |
|---|---|---|
| Hand vs Hand | AA vs KK | 82% |
| Hand vs Range | AA vs "top 20%" | 85% |
| Range vs Range | "UTG open" vs "BB call" | Varies by board |
How Range Equity Works
Calculation Concept
For each hand in your range:
- Calculate equity vs each hand in their range
- Weight by combo frequency
- Average all results
Example
Your range: AA, KK (2 hands) Their range: QQ, JJ (2 hands)
| Matchup | Equity |
|---|---|
| AA vs QQ | 81% |
| AA vs JJ | 81% |
| KK vs QQ | 81% |
| KK vs JJ | 81% |
Range equity: ~81%
Equity Shifts by Street
| Street | Range Equity Dynamics |
|---|---|
| Preflop | Wide ranges, closer to 50/50 |
| Flop | Big swings based on board |
| Turn | Narrower ranges, clearer edge |
| River | Near 100% or 0% per hand |
Board Impact on Range Equity
Example: BTN vs BB
BTN opens, BB calls.
| Flop | BTN Equity | BB Equity |
|---|---|---|
| A♠ K♥ 7♣ | ~55% | ~45% |
| 7♥ 6♥ 5♣ | ~45% | ~55% |
| J♠ T♠ 9♠ | ~48% | ~52% |
The board determines who has the equity advantage.
Using Range Equity
Strategy Implications
| Your Range Equity | Strategy |
|---|---|
| High (>55%) | Bet more often |
| Even (~50%) | Check more, be selective |
| Low (<45%) | Defend, don't overbet |
Equity ≠ Aggression Always
Having equity doesn't mean you should always bet:
| Factor | Consideration |
|---|---|
| Position | IP can realize more |
| Nut advantage | Who has the best hands? |
| Board texture | Static vs dynamic |
